Teachable Moment

Posted on March 3, 2019March 3, 2019 by ChristopherMcCurry

On the surface this poem seems to be asking us to empathize with the men in the video who are stoning the women. The video was sent to me as proof and justification for a student’s desire to use violence. My hope is the student understands that violence usually comes from the same place: fear, pain.

I think violence also comes from anger, jealousy, greed, hatred, and being hurt emotionally to many times, Why did the video want you to empathize with the men?

I don’t think we are supposed to empathize with them. But the student, who is now in the military (bigger stones) doesn’t have any empathy for these men–he doesn’t understand that he is these men.
